Shikinen Sengu of Shougu  in 2013

At Ise Jingu, every shrine will be rebuilt every 20 years and the shrine will be moved to a new location. This is the most magnificent and important festival called Ise Jingu.

Since the ceremony has just been completed in 2013, you can now visit the new shrine. The most important thing about Ise Shrine is the shrine called Shougu. There is a large vacant lot next to this Shougu.

Before the Shikinen Sengu in 2013, there was the Imperial Palace here. After about 10 minutes by bus from Geku, you will arrive at Naiku. The official name is “Toyouke Daijingu,” enshrining the Amaterasu Omikami, the ancestor of the Imperial Family.

Cross Uji Bridge over Isuzugawa and enter the Naiku. It is said to invite worshipers from the everyday world to the sacred world, and is a bridge between people and God.

Eating in Okage Yokocho(おかげ横丁)

After worshiping at Ise Jingu Shrine, it is recommended to go to a souvenir shop by eating gourmet food at Okage Yokocho. Here are some popular spots in Okage Yokocho, such as local gourmets from Akafuku and Ise Udon, and popular souvenirs.

Akafuku(赤福)

Akafuku was founded in 1707 and has been popular with many people as a souvenir for Ise-Miki for more than 300 years. Even now, if you say Ise, Akafuku! It is a souvenir that cannot be removed.

The building of the current Akafuku head office was built in 1877 (Meiji 10), and has been over 130 years old. The frontage is wide and the massive building is impressive.

On the 1st of every month, you can enjoy “Tsuitachimochi”, a seasonal sweet that you can enjoy, and it is so popular that you will be waiting in line early in the morning.

In summer, Akafuku ice is sold. When you sit down and eat on a hot day, you will feel the peace of time.

Fukusuke(ふくすけ)

“Fukusuke” can eat Ise Udon, which is unique to this region. Udon noodles with thick soy sauce and soft noodles. Because it has a unique texture, I want you to eat it! You can also change snacks.

Ise Kadoya Beer(伊勢角屋麦酒)

“Ise Kadoya Beer” is a restaurant where you can enjoy local oyster dishes. A popular point is that you can have big and juicy oysters throughout the year.

Local oysters from Tobaura Village will appear. You can taste rock oysters in summer. If you add tartar sauce to the oyster skewers, it is excellent. Please enjoy it relaxedly in the quaint shop.

Kittcho Shofukutei(吉兆招福亭)

Kittcho Shofukutei, a cat merchandise such as a beckoning cat, has approximately 1,000 kinds of beckoning cats. It is a rare shop nationwide with only beckoning cats lined up inside the store.

The most popular is the “Invitation Cat” that is affordable. It’s very cute and it squeaks into a colony form. This is the size you want to keep on your desk.

Visit to Ise Jingu Shrine(伊勢神宮)

In ancient times, Kiyomori Taira and Nobunaga Oda also visited, and in early January every year the Prime Minister visited the Ise Shrine. It is a place where you can naturally feel sacred as you walk over Ujibashi and touch the giant trees and clear air.

History of Ise Shrine

Ise Jingu is always ranked high as a place you want to go to once before you die. Even if you don’t go to Ise Shrine, you need to know what it is. Why is it in Ise, Mie Prefecture?

Two thousand years ago, Amaterasu Omikami was a festival held in the Imperial Palace, the capital of Nara, but traveled to other countries in search of a more suitable place using Yamatohimenomikoto as a stick. When I arrived in Ise, I was told that I was in this country because Ise was wonderful, and I sat down in Ise.

No detailed reason is given in Nippon Shoki or Kojiki, but it is thought that the reason is that the climate is mild and the area is blessed with seafood and mountain food.
